All those starved for NCAA tournament basketball should hunger no longer, for the wait is over. This weekend, the NCAA tournament begins, and sure to come with it are the usual array of close games, crazy upsets and buzzer beaters. All three days of the weekend, plenty of fantastic college basketball will be promised. The Red Wings and Pistons play a grand total of three times in between, nicely clearing the stage for all the madness. Also, if you’re a fan of college hockey (or a Western Michigan or University of Michigan alumni) head down to Joe Louis Arena and catch your teams as they compete for the CCHA title.
Here’s the sports rundown for St. Patrick’s Day weekend, hopefully chalk full of luck for all Michigan teams:
Friday, March 16
NCAA Tournament, all day long (CBS, TBS, TNT, TruTV): Day two of the big dance starts off the weekend in style, as games will be going on all afternoon and evening. Of local interest will be Michigan, Michigan State and Detroit. The nights sets up perfectly for fans to watch nearly all three games. The Wolverines tip off against Ohio University at 7:20 p.m. on TNT, the Spartans play LIU Brooklyn on at 9:20 p.m. on TBS, and the Detroit Titans close out the night trying to knock off Kansas at 9:57 p.m. on TruTV.
Detroit Pistons at Phoenix Suns, 10:30 p.m. EST (FSD): The night of crazy college basketball closes with some pro action, as the Pistons start the weekend off on the road trying to build off a nice victory Wednesday night in Sacramento. Detroit’s been hot by their standards lately, and is trying to remain afloat to chase a playoff spot. Given how the season started, that’s remarkable.
CCHA Championship Semifinal at Joe Louis Arena, 4:35 and 8:05 p.m. EST: Two Michigan teams are in play this weekend in Detroit, as Miami Ohio plays Western Michigan first at 4:35 and Michigan takes on suprising Bowling Green immediately after. The winners of each game will face off in the CCHA Championship on Saturday night for an automatic bid to the NCAA hockey tournament and all the postseason bragging rights. This tournament has provided plenty of close finishes and dramatic moments in the past.
Saturday, March 17
NCAA Tournament, all day long (CBS, TBS, TNT, TruTV): The third round begins with plenty of exciting games. Thursday’s winners advance and match up all day, creating plenty of exciting drama that you won’t want to miss, no matter what team you are pulling for or how your bracket will be affected.
Detroit Red Wings at San Jose Sharks, 10:30 p.m. EST (FSD): The struggling Red Wings try to break a three game losing streak and get some points in the shark tank on Saturday night. It’s looking like the team will have back the services of several injured players, perhaps even Pavel Datsyuk. Certainly, health before the playoffs is what’s most important to the Red Wings at this point. It would be extra sweet for the team to end their losing skid against the tough Sharks, as well.
CCHA Championship Final at Joe Louis Arena, 4:35 and 8:05: Being that two Michigan teams exist and neither play one another, the possibility exists for an all-Michigan final with the Broncos facing off against the Wolverines. Stay tuned to see how this one plays out, and who gets the automatic bid.
Sunday, March 18
NCAA Tournament, all day long (CBS, TBS, TNT, TruTV): Should any of Michigan, Michigan State or Detroit advance (and selfishly, we’re sure hoping all of them do) Sunday will be the day they’ll each hit the court again. Stay tuned for further information on times and television networks for whichever teams move on. Outside of the local angle, enjoy the final day of the first weekend of madness.
Detroit Pistons at Los Angeles Clippers, 3:30 p.m. EST (FSD): The Pistons conclude their weekend on the road by visiting the Staples Center to take on the Clippers and “lob city” for the first time. Chris Paul, Blake Griffin and the Clippers are fun to watch, so fans have the option of watching an exciting young NBA team—and there’s always the Pistons.
Entire weekend rating: 5 Joe Louis Fist Bumps (out of 5). No need to go into detail about every day this weekend. It’s March Madness, so that means a five star weekend is guaranteed. Enough said. Enjoy all the fantastic college hoops action.
