Detroit Pistons Links: Will Dion Waiters Be Off the Board Before Pistons’ No. 9 Pick?

Here are the latest news and notes for June 11, 2012:

• Syracuse guard Dion Waiters is a good news/bad news type of prospect. He can pile up points in a hurry, but his lethargic defense and questionable character has his draft stock all over the board, with at least one mock sending him to Detroit at No. 9. But Waiters’ agent reportedly told Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo, whose team has the No. 8 pick, that Waiters has a “promise” that he’ll be selected by a team picking ahead of the Raptors. — Hoops World

• Why would Waiters even be on the Pistons’ minds, when they so clearly need help on the frontline? Well, Free Press beat writer Vince Ellis suggests a scenario where there’s a run on big men during the top eight picks — as there was last season, which caused Brandon Knight to fall into Detroit’s lap at No. 8. Should that happen, the Pistons might consider a scorer under the “best player available” approach. — Free Press

• If the Pistons do wind up going with a big man, Mississippi State’s Arnett Moultrie might be the guy. Moultrie’s name has been linked to the Pistons with increasing regularity in recent days, as his stock continues to climb. And Moultrie believes that he is a “perfect fit” to play alongside Greg Monroe. — Clarion Ledger

• Another big man that we’ve mentioned before as a Pistons possibility: Myers Leonard, the lanky center from Illinois. Leonard turned in a big performance at the NBA Draft combine, helping his stock climb to previously unseen heights. ESPN’s Chad Ford came away from the combine thinking that Leonard may have worked his way into the lottery. — SBNation

• NBA TV will air its “Dream Team” documentary on Wednesday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of probably the greatest collection of talent to ever suit up together. Ex-Piston Isiah Thomas deserved a spot on that roster, but was snubbed, mainly because some of the other members of the team — Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone — did not want the Detroit point guard to join them. The documentary promises to touch on that storyline. — Detroit News
