Detroit Red Wings Links: Could Gustav Nyquist Be a Key Piece in a Rick Nash Trade?

Here are the latest news and rumors for July 16, 2012:

• If the Columbus Blue Jackets pull the trigger on a long-rumored Rick Nash trade, GM Scott Howson has said he wants “NHL forwards” back (and his reported request of young superstar Jeff Skinner from the Hurricanes definitely hints at that thought.)

But do the Red Wings have anyone that fits the bill? Valtteri Filppula, with one year left on his current contract, could be an option; other possibilities include Justin Abdelkader (currently a restricted free agent) or veterans like Danny Cleary and Johan Franzen, though the latter’s massive contract would make him hard to deal.

• The Red Wings appeared to land a pretty solid 2012 draft class, despite trading their first-round pick to land Kyle Quincey. But how long will it take Martin Frk, Jake Peterson and the rest of Detroit’s picks to be NHL-ready? — Hockey’s Future

• Speaking of Red Wings youngsters … turned in a solid developmental camp effort and will be back with Detroit in September for training camp. All indications, though, are that the gifted forward will spend next season in Finland before joining the Wings’ organization for the 2013-14 campaign. And Pulkinnen says this coming year is “so important” in his future. — Free Press

• From the young to the old: “will play and will excel,” according to his agent. The 47-year-old netminder previously said that he would try to make one final go of it in the NHL, and now he just needs to find a team. — Rotoworld

• Has Detroit lost its luster as a destination for NHL free agents? Recent events seem to indicate that may be possible, but Red Wings GM Ken Holland remains steadfast in his belief that Hocketown still has plenty to offer. — The Morning Sun
