Even better news came just a couple of hours later, when the Indians put the finishing touches on a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. That victory coupled with Detroit’s win moved the Tigers a full game up in the AL Central with just one week left in the regular season.
That all means that Detroit now completely controls its destiny. If the Tigers win out, the White Sox cannot catch them in the division race; if the White Sox were to pull back even after 162 games, there would be a one-game tiebreaker in Detroit for the AL Central crown.
Here’s the current standings, with the games of Sept. 26 wrapped up:
Chicago: 82-72 (1 GB)
The White Sox are six games back in the wild card — it’s virtually impossible for two AL Central teams to get to the postseason, so it’s the division title or bust.
