The Grand Rapids Griffins scored a franchise-record 11 goals in an 11-6 win over the Rockford Ice Hogs on Saturday night, but that offensive output was nothing compared to the show the two rivals put on in the second period.
The Griffins, a Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate, and the Ice Hogs, a part of the Chicago Blackhawks farm system, engaged in a no-holds-barred, benches-clearing brawl. The mayhem sparked when Grand Rapids’ Riley Sheahan and Rockford Kyle Beach squared off, with everyone else on the ice at the time — including goalies Petr Mrazek and Carter Hutton — began throwing punches.
The benches then cleared for a couple more minutes of fisticuffs. All told, 13 players (eight from Rockford and five from Grand Rapids) were given game misconducts and ejected. Since the fight occurred in the second period, that left both teams severely shorthanded for the final 20-plus minutes of the game.
Mrazek, Sheahan, Brian Lashoff, Francis Pare and Gleason Fournier were the Griffins tossed from the game. Beach, Hutton, Shawn Lalonde, Philippe Paradis, Wade Brookbank, Adam Clendening, Rob Flick and Kenndal McArdle were sent packing for the Ice Hogs.
