Let’s just say that the Detroit Red Wings did not get the benefit of many friendly whistles in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday night. The Wings found themselves facing a 5-on-3 on two separate occasions, totaling about four minutes of game time — and the Kings tied the game at one on the second of those two-man advantages, midway through the third.
And yet, for all the calls, all the on-ice officials somehow missed Los Angeles’ Dustin Penner delivering an elbow to the back of Brendan Smith’s head.
Penner appeared to be trying to get around Smith in the Wings’ end, but in the process leaped and caught Smith high, sending the Wings’ defenseman to the ice. Smith needed help getting to the bench, then the Kings (of course) pocketed the game-winning goal moments later.
