Justin Abdelkader’s controversial hit turned Game 3 — and possibly the series — of the Detroit-Anaheim playoff series in the Ducks’ favor.
The two teams were locked in a close-checking 0-0 tie late in the second period when Abdelkader delivered a punishing shot on Anaheim defender Toni Lydman, which knocked Lydman from the game with a possible head injury. Abdelkader was given a five-minute major and game misconduct, and the Ducks immediately struck for a power-play goal.
Abdelkader could be facing a suspension, too. The NHL’s head of discipline, former Wing Brendan Shanahan, no doubt will review the play; Shanahan just suspended Ottawa’s Eric Gryba for a hit that left Lars Eller injured.
Here’s the video of Abdelkader’s hit:
Did he deserve the penalty? Should he be suspended?
