Jakub Kindl Signs 4-Year Contract: Updating the Detroit Red Wings’ Salary Cap Situation

agreed to a four-year, $9.6-million deal with the on Friday night, locking the restricted free agent into the team’s lineup for the foreseeable future. Kindl finally delivered this season on the high hopes Detroit had for him, finishing with a plus-15 rating, 13 points and spending time on both the penalty-kill and power-play units.

The reported $2.4 million-per-year salary cap hit obviously cuts into the money that the Red Wings had available this offseason, but it’s still a very reasonable deal on both ends. As the roster stands now, Kindl is the fifth highest-paid defenseman, behind Niklas Kronwall, Kyle Quincey, Jonathan Ericsson and Carlo Colaiacovo. However, only Kronwall is signed beyond next season, and rumor has it that Detroit will try to deal Colaiacovo at this weekend’s draft.

With Kindl back in the fold, the Red Wings now have three restricted free agents left: Joakim Andersson, Gustav Nyquist and Brendan Smith. All three reportedly will receive qualifying offers from the Red Wings, meaning that Detroit would have the choice of matching any offer given those players by another team or receiving compensation.

Via CapGeek, here’s a look at where the Red Wings would stand following minimum qualifying offers to Smith, Nyquist and Andersson (though, like Kindl, it’s possible that at least one or two or that trio receives longer-term, more-lucrative deals).

Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($3.000m)
Drew Miller ($1.350m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Todd Bertuzzi ($2.075m)
Justin Abdelkader ($1.800m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m) / Jordin Tootoo ($1.900m)
Tomas Tatar ($0.840m) / Cory Emmerton ($0.533m) / Patrick Eaves ($1.200m)
Gustav Nyquist ($0.788m) / Joakim Andersson ($0.605m)

Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Kyle Quincey ($3.775m)
Jonathan Ericsson ($3.250m) / Carlo Colaiacovo ($2.500m)
Jakub Kindl ($2.400m) / Danny DeKeyser ($1.350m)
Brian Lashoff ($0.725m) / Brendan Smith ($0.827m)

Jimmy Howard ($5.292m)
Jonas Gustavsson ($1.500m)

(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,322,254; BONUSES: $1,010,000
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $5,987,746

Several factors could alter the Red Wings’ roster and financial outlook in the coming days, including potential compliance buyouts of players like Mikael Samuelsson, Colaiacovo, Todd Bertuzzi or others; plus, as mentioned above, the Wings may try to move Colaiacovo or Jordin Tootoo before the end of the 2013 draft.

The roster numbers already do not work out — teams may carry up to 23 players on the active roster, so Detroit will be one over that if Andersson, Nyquist and Smith are added.
