Detroit Red Wings Salary Cap Update: Brendan Smith Signs 2-Year, $2.525 Million Deal

When filed for arbitration, we worked out the ’ updated salary cap with an estimated cap hit of $2 million per year Wings GM Ken Holland did even better, reportedly signing Smith to a two-year deal worth $2.525 million total — $1.25 million in 2013-14 and $1.275 million in 2014-15.

That’s less than what Danny DeKeyser will make next season ($1.35 million) and makes Smith the second lowest-paid defenseman currently on the roster, with only Brian Lashoff ($725K) costing less.

So, no more guessing. Here’s the official cap update, with Smith’s $1.25 million 2013-14 hit included:

Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($5.500m)

(these totals are compiled with the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $66,252,879; BONUSES: $3,010,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,057,121

As the Wings try to dance around roster space and the salary cap, saving more than $700,000 over our estimate is no small thing. Smith’s deal leaves Detroit more than $1 million under the cap, with restricted free agents Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist left to sign.

Those deals still will push Detroit over the cap, but Holland will have to make at least a couple of moves before the regular season.

This is good news all around for the Wings. They get to keep Smith, a promising defenseman, and can do so at a very reasonable cost.
