David Legwand lost his temper after a scrap with Evgeni Malkin … and he nearly cost the Detroit Red Wings the game vs. Pittsburgh on Thursday night. Malkin knocked Legwand’s helmet off as the two engaged near the net, and Legwand responded by delivering a butt-end spear into Malkin’s midsection.
Malkin sold it fully in front of the ref, who handed Legwand a five-minute match penalty and game misconduct.
Legwand likely will hear from Brendan Shanahan and the NHL discipline office in the coming days. A suspension may be a possibility, though Montreal’s Alexei Emelin was fined $5K for a similar infraction last month.
