Scratch one free-agent defenseman off the Detroit Red Wings’ wish list. MLive’s Ansar Khan reported late Monday night, mere hours before NHL free agency began, that the Wings were “no longer in the running” for former Buffalo defenseman Christian Ehrhoff, who was handed a compliance buyout earlier this week.
The sticking point in the process: Ehrhoff is seeking a five-year deal, according to Khan; the Wings maxed out at a three-year proposal. Earlier reports had the Wings among the teams most interested in the 31-year-old Ehrhoff, a capable skating defenseman who would have fit well into the Wings’ scheme.
Ehrhoff is one of just a handful of available defensemen with top-four potential, alongside fellow Wings targets Dan Boyle and Matt Niskanen. The ex-Sabre is likely to draw plenty of attention elsewhere, even with the Wings bailing on the pursuit.
