Detroit Red Wings Rumors: Wings Out on Christian Ehrhoff Due to Contract Demands

Scratch one free-agent defenseman off the ’ wish list. MLive’s Ansar Khan reported late Monday night, mere hours before NHL free agency began, that the Wings were “no longer in the running” for former Buffalo defenseman , who was handed a compliance buyout earlier this week.

The sticking point in the process: Ehrhoff is seeking a five-year deal, according to Khan; the Wings maxed out at a three-year proposal. Earlier reports had the Wings among the teams most interested in the 31-year-old Ehrhoff, a capable skating defenseman who would have fit well into the Wings’ scheme.

Ehrhoff is one of just a handful of available defensemen with top-four potential, alongside fellow Wings targets Dan Boyle and Matt Niskanen. The ex-Sabre is likely to draw plenty of attention elsewhere, even with the Wings bailing on the pursuit.
